Inspiration: Flowers + Mice

Part of a series inspired by non-papercraft things I see.

As a designer, and very visual person, I’ve always found inspiration for design and color everywhere I go. I take a lot of pictures on my phone to capture some of it, other times — like when I’m driving — I just make mental notes (and hope I remember later). I have been known to tell siri to add a list of colors to my Notes app so I can remember…

Anyway, this card was inspired by a Lily Pulitzer collection my daughter and I saw when we were at the mall a couple of weeks ago. I’d just gotten the Spellbinders Steamboat Willie dies, but hadn’t used them yet because I was busy wrapping up work before vacation.

Techniques:

  • This is the pattern that inspired me. The Mickey and Minnie with just a touch of color, on the floral print background.

  • It turns out, I don’t really have any smaller patterned background stamps or stencils in floral prints. I tend to choose more bold patterns. Keep in mind that creating based on inspiration doesn’t have to be exact. That can be too complicated and to me feels too “copied”. Just pull from it whatever inspires or works for you.

  • I used a Turnabout stamp from Concord & 9th for the background. The simple yet artistic curves and shapes works well with the shapes (and style) of the dies. I chose foiur colors inspired by the fabric, but in total transparency, I just worked from memory and didn’t pull up the photo. (If I had, I probably would have used a different mix of colors: Sweet Pea, Pink Lemonade, Sprout, and Aqua Sky, with little accents of Clementine or Marmalade.) It is a good example of how the inspiration doesn’t need to dictate exactly what the product looks like. The card is good either way, and would be in many more color palettes, also!

  • The two characters are cut from classic black and white. I pulled in little touches of the two pinks from the background for their mouths, clothing, and shoes.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Pink Lemonade, Honeysuckle, Harbor, Black, White.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Pink Lemonade, Honeysuckle, Marmalade, Parsley, Harbor.

Thank you for visiting! I hope you get some time to create something soon.
