Sentiment Stamps as Background Art

The Thank You Basics stamp set from CZ Design and Simon Says Stamp is one I can tell I’m going to get a lot of use here. It includes a great mix of sentiments in different sizes, styles, and levels of formality. For this card, I wanted to show off a number of these.

Techniques:

  • I started with an A2 cardstock panel, and ink blended coordinating color ink over it working from center of the panel, blending it out both up and down.

  • To create a background pattern with these sentiment stamps, I selected a group that worked together stylistically, and arranged them close together on an A2 card panel.

    • So that they would have some structure and alignment, I arranged them in horizontal rows, paying attention to spacing and alignment.

    • I loosely left-justified them, so they all start near the left side of the card panel, and the right side is where there is more variation.

    • In most instances, I aligned the stamps at the right with either the baseline or x-height of the letters in the stamps on the left side. (It is a VERY loose grid, but still provides some structure and grounding to the design.)

  • I stamped all those background words in black, but then came in with a gold pigment ink pad and added gold ink on top of the black for an interesting effect. I clear embossed them after that.

    • I kept most of the gold stamping to the sides and top of the card. I wanted to keep the words in the center of the card more simple (in terms of color) because I knew that was where the focal point items would be and I wanted the background to be secondary to those elements.

  • A few hearts that I stamped only in black fill in some of the open spaces and act as accents, while a splattering of gold paint adds pattern, texture, shine.

  • I die cut the flowers out of three shades of green (for the stems) and white and cream for the petals.

  • I stamped and embossed the main sentiment on a brighter color of purple cardstock. I used gold emobssing powder only, so it is brighter and more golden than the background words. I layered that strip over the darker colored stems and behind the lighter colored ones to create a sense of depth on a mostly flat card. I did use foam squares behind the center of that sentiment strip.
